ASILE conference presentation:
– An Intercultural Exchange
Proyek Persahabatan – An Intercultural Exchange Practice with native speakers is often a luxury in a foreign language classroom. Students often see it as a good idea, but also as something to do only when there is time. By embedding practice with native speakers in the assessment, students are strongly encouraged to make the effort to do interact with native speakers and hopefully realise the benefit afterwards.
This year, La Trobe University and Universitas Pendidikan Ganesha has started implementing a pilot project on collaborative intercultural learning, which helps address this issue. Each student is paired with a buddy and they have to complete a series of assignments together.
In this paper I give a preliminary report on this project, especially the extent to which this pilot program has addressed this issue and the extent to which it has enhanced experiential learning for this student cohort. I found that this experience helped students reflect on their similarities and differences as neighbours in this globalised world.
